What is a "net"?

Generally speaking, A net is a scheduled on-air gathering of licensed GMRS operators using repeaters or simplex frequencies to talk, share info, and build community, often focusing on emergency preparedness or local news. A requires FCC call signs for sign-ins and utilize our repeater, allowing members to check in, discuss equipment, or just chat in a structured, directed format.

Key Aspects of a GMRS Club Net:

  • Purpose: Community building, emergency communication practice, sharing information, and "rag chewing" (casual conversation).
  • Structure: Often "directed" or "scripted," meaning a Net Control operator manages the flow of communication.
  • Participation: Requires a valid GMRS license (FCC call sign) for official check-ins, though guests might join with a sign-in.Listen for, and acknowledge "breaks", expecially emergency ones.
  • Technology: We use our own repeater - See our Repeater Page for repeater access.
Anyone can participate! Our net control will ask for checkins throughout the net. This is the time for anyone to check in. You can check in by simply keying up, stating your call sign, name, and location. Be sure to follow the direction of net control and check in only when invited to do so.
